Судя по поиску в Google, "апплет" употребляется гораздо чаще. В словарях на
slovari.yandex.ru тоже побеждает "апплет". А вот поиск по ru.sun.com дает
только "аплет". Но это не признак профессионализма или "чутья".
Особой разницы нет, лишь бы использовался только один из вариантов.
