Я вот с такой железкой:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X (rev 5c)
ничего подобного не замечал - XFree86-4.1.0.1-alt4, ati_gatos, atyfb
Кстати, ati_gatos для этой железки хорош тем, что умеет Xvideo.
