Спасибо, советами воспользовался.
Выяснил следующее. При подключении к компьютеру через кард-ридер
sd-карта выглядит стандартно, /dev/sdb1, и спокойно форматируется
# mkfs.vfat -F 16 /dev/sdb1
(FAT16 нужен по инструкции к книге)
После установки в книгу и подключении через кабель компьютер видит /dev/sdb
без номера раздела. В этом положении, согласно инструкции, форматировать
нельзя.
Так что проблема исчезла сама собой.
