Нет. Выдало кучу предупреждений о несовместимости со стандартом, но
завершилось без ошибок. В результате меню без изменений.

Вдогонку: от нового юзера все прекрасно. Как бы старому юзеру сделать
тоже хорошо?

Попробуйте переименовать ~/.config/menus и заново kbuildsycoca4 --
noincremental
