Нельзя ли в ядро по умолчанию включить
(4GB) High memory support
А то как-то не очень приятно пересобирать ядро только ради этого.

Используйте smp ядро, там это дефалтом уже включено, а на
однопроцессорных тачках оно так же хорошо работает как и up.

не думаю. все таки большинство пока до 1G не доросли, а ядро начинает вести себя совсем по другому...
