:) Запускает он с правами root
# id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) группы=0(root),...
но не от root
# echo $USER
altlinux
В его переменной PATH пользователя, нет того пути где лежит update-kernel.
Поэтому его интерпретатор и сообщает "не могу найти по путям указанным в
переменной PATH":
bash: update-kernel: команда не найдена
