Оказался тут у меня GPS навигатор Pioneer PM-977 с установленными
на нём Autosputnik, Navitel, GisRussia, iGO8, AMIGO и OziExplorer
(отец любит и умеет экспериментировать с навигационными
программами).
Вопрос в следующем, какую дополнительную пользу я могу извлечь из
этого устройства и компа с ALT Linux Sisyphus?

приклеить его с торца. будешь всегда точно знать, где (географически)
расположен компьютер.

gpsbabel для конвертации разных форматов (треков и пр.)
viking, qlandkartegt для просмотра карт, треков, точек.

Да, уже посмотрел на viking. Умеет сосать карты с OpenStreetMap
и загружать треки из *.gpx.
