Касательно определялок среднестатистического железа
(разумеется, в письме сотрудника Red Hat подразумевается,
что все на свете и так знают, что такое Smolt!):

help with our code base, especially in the scope of packaging the
smolt client for SuSE, Debian, Ubuntu, Mandrake, you name it.
We're hoping Smolt will grow far beyond being just a "Fedora"

Помню, поднимался вопрос о производительности 4-го десктопа.
Если smolt умеет её определять, было бы неплохо увидеть на каких машинах
дистриб как бегает.

Идея хорошая.... а что считает сообщество?

Не умеет, насколько вижу.  Бегает лучше, чем спрашивают ;-)
