Есть мнение, что было бы логично пинать zend про сборки --
они бинарщину разводят, им её вес и тянуть... понимаю,
что вряд ли пошевелятся.

У меня есть мнение, что сейчас zend нужен только на хостингах (из-за
уродского софта, который с целью закрытия кода требует zend optimizer).
В общем-то всем остальным эта поделка не так чтобы очень уж нужна.
Скажем мне оказалось проще лишить себя лишних 100$/месяц чем заниматься
поддержкой этого [censored]. А коммерческие хостеры, если это им надо,
пусть _сами_ собирают и поддерживают compatibility сборки. Я не понимаю
почему все должны жертвовать надёжностью и безопасностью ради небольшого
количества закрытого PHP-софта.
