Вроде я его ж и ставлю? А в PROVIDES у него лишь
python

И совсем не 2.3

Что делать? Пересобрать?

Нет. Вы ставите python = 2.3.3. Такие уж особенности у rpm.

Пакет python - это заглушка. Настоящий питон - это python-base, python-strict & python-relaxed.
Два последних и содержат python = 2.3.

apt-get install python - это самый лучший вариант, у нас apt-based дистрибутив. НО: если уж вам 
_так_ хочется поставить его руками, то примерно так:

rpm -ivh python-modules python-modules-hotshot python python-base python-modules-email python-modules-curses python-modules-compiler python-strict  python-modules-encodings python-modules-xml python-modules-logging

Учтите, эта строка сама по себе не является правильной, так как должны быть указаны имена файлов с пакетами,
а не имена пакетов. И вообще-то лучше пользоваться apt.
