Ни разу такого не видел. Странно это.
Возможно что это последствия каких то Ваших ошибочных манипуляций
в системе.
Долбаните этот каталог и создайте там файл
mtab c правами root.root 0644
в притнципе он и сам создаваться должен, но на всякий случай ;-))

error reading /etc/mtab: Is a directory
Причем в ней лежит один файл README такого содержания:
Please disregard this tarball.
Это глюк или баг, и главное чей?
