Зравствуйте!
А чего так странно себя ведет gswitchit? Или это только у меня?
gnome2. В панель добавляем апплет gnome-dictionary и gswitchit. При
нажатии любой клавиши в поле словаря переключается язык и ничего не
вводится. Удаляю gswitchit из панели - все нормально.

Обратитесь к Удальцову. Автор все таки и тоже по русски общается :)
