Виноват. Сбило с толку меня два обстоятельства. При запуске
apt-get -s dist-upgrade выдаётся сообщение Conf xmtr broken (по
памяти). А при запуске из под root'а:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
При запуске пользователем работает нормально. Прошу извинения за
ложную тревогу.

Правильно, xmtr под рутом работать перестал. Это будем считать feature.

Ну, у feature должно быть рациональное объяснение. Например,
ссылка на changelog gtk+ в р-не 1.2.10. :-)
