Планируется, но не скоро (возможно, в ноябре). 5.8 бирарно не совместим
с 5.6, поэтому придется пересобирать всё, что связано с перлом и с
libperl.so.5 (например, vim).
По моим ощущениям, стабильность новых версий перла (после 5.005_03)
стала стремительно падать. Некоторое время назад я собирал 5.8.0-RC2. В
core он вываливался проще, чем что-либо ещё. Как раз с ithreads были
проблемы. Есть какой-то плохо воспроизводимый глюк c Tie::Hash, который
также приводит к segfault. Так что пробовать собирать нужно, но спешить
не стоит.
А какие именно возможности Вам нужны в 5.8?
