В моем случае update-menus, похоже, не при чём ...
Скорее всего, kernel-2.4.8+XFree-4.2.0 vs моё_железо(где-то в районе IDE-AGP-VIDEO)
Кстати - в моё описание мамки вкралась ошибка - читать
