Почему может быть такое странное поведение? Если сказать
$ssh localhost -l <user> то все в порядке. Надо настройки
PAM смотреть?

Это есть последствия ошибки в... login-0.60-alt5 :)
workaround: passwd bubby

Пароль можно менять - обновление все равно надо будет установить, когда
оно появится.
