По мотивам замечаний и комментариев Сергея Власова было написано письмо Вильямсу.
Цитирую ответы:
1. "Подозрительный FontMatrix"

Причины выясняются.
3. Потеря 'Hint replacement' при открытии pfb
-- True, and I have expectation of changing that. It's even mentioned in the docs in various places.
Когда появится исправленный вариант pfaedit, шрифты будут перегенерированы.
