С радостью сообщаю, что после обновления 30 мая из Sisyphus
проблема с первым логином пользователя в xdm (а может, и не
только в xdm) исчезла. Я так, подозреваю, что благодаря
разработчикам ;) Спасибо!

Внимание всем, кто успел обновить предыдущие версии pam < 0.75-alt5 из
Сизифа: Вам необходимо довести это обновление до конца, установив
pam-0.75-alt5. В нем, по сравнению с предыдущим релизом pam-0.75,
исправлены две ошибки (одна - та, вседствие которой падал xdm, и другая,
вследствие которой некорректно работал passwd).
Если у Вас /usr находится на собственном разделе, то желательно также
обновить пакет glib до версии glib-1.2.10-alt2.
