Есть такая вещь - socks. Он даже авторизацию умеет. Правда клиенты
под него под винду нормальные только за деньги, но есть и бесплатные,
вполне юзабельные. + в некотором софте есть встроенная поддержка.
Под юниксы не знаю, какие есть и как работают.
