С учетом того, что в GNOME многие диалоги настроек имеют фиксированную ширину, я даже не сомневаюсь, что ваше ухищрение в случае тех багов было совершенно оправданно.
К сожалению, разработчики GNOME не уважают своих пользователей и труд других разработчиков. Если будет время и желание, можете почитать подборку ярких примеров по ссылке [1]. Хотя, я не в курсе, как сейчас у них обстоит дело конкретно с локализацией программ.
