Здравствуйте.
А не запускать ли slocate, makewhatis и других под nice?
В идеале хотелось бы иметь "ждущий" запуск (при LA меньше
заданной) -- я когда-то так себе сделал.

А не сделать ли это по-умолчанию для crond?

Это, кстати, умеет at.

У меня уже давно задания крону через batch запускаются
05 5 * * * root echo "run-parts /etc/cron.daily" | batch > /dev/null 2>&1
10 5 * * 0 root echo "run-parts /etc/cron.weekly" | batch > /dev/null 2>&1
Никаких проблем.
