Я бы сделал более гибкое решение:
1) Проверяем наличие /etc/modules-<kernelversion>.<major>.<minor>, если
есть - используем
2) Проверяем наличие /etc/modules-<kernelversion>.<major>, если есть -
используем
3) Если нет первых двух, то используем /etc/modules
Работать будет всегда и переход можно сделать более мягким.
