Можно использовать ваш вариант, но и сервер и клиент должны быть
загружены с livecd, а их диски отмонтированы. Клонировать
примонтированые диски нельзя. Единственный недостаток такого метода --
он ОЧЕНЬ медленный. Специализированные средства намного быстрее
(данные могут рассылаться мультикастом, копируются только используемые
участки диска). Ну и совет со сжатием тоже был верным.
