Иногда MySQL падает :

Version: '5.0.22'  socket: '/mysql.sock'  port: 3306  ALT Linux MySQL RPM
mysqld got signal 11;

or one of the libraries it was linked against is corrupt, improperly built,
or misconfigured. This error can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware.
We will try our best to scrape up some info that will hopefully help 
diagnose
the problem, but since we have already crashed, something is definitely 
wrong

key_buffer_size + (read_buffer_size + sort_buffer_size)*max_connections

Советы , приведеные в вышеуказаной ссылке по тестированию и оптимизации 
базы итд,
к успеху не привели.

Может быть mysql 5.0.x еще сыровата ?
Есть смысл откатиться на 4.1.x ?

У меня он так падал, когда я через ПХПшный скрипт парсил XML файл, 
состоящий из около 1500000 записей и добавлял в базу. А памяти на тачке 
было 512 метров. Когда начал постепенно парсить по 20000 записей, так 
все проблемы сразу ушли.
