снес j2se, установил j2re-1.4.1_02-1asp и
j2re-java-plugin-1.4.1_02-1asp, таже батва...
в чем может быть проблема?

В разнице версий gcc в мозилле и джаве. Если мозилла собрана gcc 3,
то качать с blackdown или j2re1.4.2 - там есть специальный плугин для
вещей, собранных gcc 3.

кстати о птичках... пустил мозилу из консоли и:
$ mozilla
grep: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
sed: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory
cut: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory
где она его ищет непонятно...
придется, по ходу, пересобирать и мозилу, и яву. хотя проще пересобрать
яву, либо с 3.2, либо с 2.96 (был бы src)

Итак, для всех интересующихся...
Мозила собирается с gcc-3.2, для нее нужен j2re-1_4_2-linux-i586.rpm,
взять можно здесь
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/java-sun/J2SE/1.4.2/linux/j2re-1_4_2-linux-i586-rpm.bin
или завтра (9.07.2003) часам к 10 будет здесь
http://progroup.ru/linux/j2re-1_4_2-linux-i586.rpm
в нем плагины, собранные и с 3.2, и с 2.96
