Например, в том, как именно устанавливали MATE (каким метапакетом).
В профиле для alt-workstation.iso задан такой список:
mate-default
mate-file-manager-actions
mate-file-manager-terminal
mate-document-viewer-caja
mate-document-viewer-djvu
altlinux-freedesktop-menu-mate
consolehelper
