А может кто-нибудь объяснить почему существуют два апача? Я что-то так
и не смог найти этому объяснение. Ведь не просто так mod_php и
mod_perl под первый? Что не так со вторым?

Существенно разные поддерживаемые версии.

Jedem das Seine. Некоторые экстремалы вроде subversion'овцев
при этом успели заложиться именно на 2.x.

Первый -- работает, второй -- пытаются допинать до где-то как-то
пригодного состояния после нашествия студентов, обкурившихся
неправильных книжек.
