Есть ли программа для оптического распознавания русского языка?
Слышал, что есть версия FineReader для linux. Но она-то
естественно платная. Жаль.

FineReader 7.0 Home Edition под Windows нормально работает в wine
(родном из АЛМ 2.4).. Он, конечно, платный, но цена (в Москве) - от 700
р. Это не даром, но вполне доступно. (АЛМ на DVD стоит от 600 р.).
Единственная заморочка - приходится сначала сканировать страницы
через SANE, а потом открывать их в FineReader-е для распознования, так
как подключить сканер через twain в wine мне не удалось. Кроме того, не
удалось активировать сохранение распознанных страниц в html.
А так - всё работает ;-)

Что это? Это не для сканеров, случаем? (в backports было)

Пробовал - у меня этот wine как-то не пошёл - либо одна прога не
грузится,, либо другая :-( Пришлось откатиться на версию из коробки.

Откатить libxml2.

Все. Нормальный теперь у меня libxml2.
Скажите такое со всеми бывает или только со мной?! Сколько раз питание тухло
(пробки выбивало) и ничего подобного не наблюдалось.

Появилось немного времени... вернулся к старым бедам.

Не подключен iconv.h

Похоже он подключается в каких-то #ifdef, значит нужно смотреть что
это за переменная и по каким критериям она определяется при configure
