Здравствуйте!

Есть DVD-фильм с русским языком и русскими субтитрами.

Пытаюсь посмотреть так:

$ mplayer dvd://

AVI-файлы при этом проигрываются без проблем и со звуком

Пытаюсь так:

$ xine dvd:// 2>&1 | tee ~/xine.log

Фильм проигрывается, но с английскими субтитрами и с английским звуком.

Что я делаю неправильно?

Курить man mplayer. Найдите в man'е текст "Quickstart DVD 
playing". Про субтитры и язык в мане тоже всё есть. Ключи -aid 
-alang, -sid, -slang

Навскидку: в Вашем случае, вероятно, пройдёт:

$ mplayer dvd://1 -alang ru -slang ru

, если, конечно, на диске есть русский язык и русские субтитры.

А если уж совсем лень, запускайте gmplayer и устанавливайте всё, 
что в голову взбредёт, через popup-меню.

В xine звуковые дорожки и субтитры переключаются через 
popup-меню. На предмет ключей командной строки -- опять-таки 
курить man xine.
