Угу. procmail рулит.

Угу. Хотя бы то, что отправляемые письма лежат в очереди постфикса, а не в
мылере, и для их отправки после подключения не надо производить никаких
телодвижений, в т.ч. не надо даже запускать мылер.

Ну и mutt сложновато юзать без вышеперечисленного.

Есть довольно широкий класс задач, для решения которых shell подходит не
хуже самого модного скриптового языка.
Есть (моё личное) наблюдение, что большинство программистов не умеет
писать надёжные программы не только на shell, но и на всех языках
программирования, которыми они пользуются.
