Насколько я помню в Red Hat есть такая консольная прога "switchdesk".
Соответственно чтобы сделать по-умолчанию КДЕ нужно написать
#switchdesk kde
А вообще зачем тебе Red Hat - это плохой дистрибутив во всех отношениях
начиная от "фирменной" обработки программного обеспечения и кончая политикой
разработки. К тому же там нет системы сетевого обновления типа apt-get и
нормального репозитория. Единственное ИМХО на что он годен, так это для
специализированных, на одну определенную функцию, серверов или рабочих
станций. И вообще Red Hat жутко коммерческий и не следует линуксовым
традициям типа работы под обычным пользователем, почти что винда ...
ИМХО Самый лучший дистрибутив для ЛЮБОЙ задачи - ALT Linux Sisyphus с какой
стороны не посмотри. Ещё можно обратить внимание на Debian и Shlakware, а
для начиниющих - Mandrake :-)
