Вопрос снят.
Поняв что ответов скорее всего не будет, видимо проблема о-о-очень экзотическая,
бросил мучать apt, rpm и начал анализировать результаты всех моих экспериментов.
Имеем:
1. Никто с такими проблемами не сталкивался
2. У меня самого это уже не первая (даже не десятая) инсталляция Мастера и раньше
apt не глючил так.
3. Кроме сообщений про RPM_STRING_TYPE, тут еще навалом разных
Segmentation faults и md5sum mismatch
в общем я решил что проблема наверное аппаратная, а общего на двух компах на которых
глюк устойчиво воспроизводся только CD-привод которым я пользовался для установки
системы. Его и заменил - проблема исчезла.
