Хотел бы узнать у уважаемой общественности,
есть ли смысл использовать hdparm при работе
c junior 2 или там и так все ок???

Операция, дающая заметный прирост производительности
по показаниям самого hdparm - включения DMA. В современных
сборках ядер этот режим используется по умолчанию.
Можно, конечно, добиться большего, но 1)есть риск некорректной работы диска
2)на практике этот прирост не почувствуется
В общем, и так все OK.

Посмотрите настройки (hdparm -i /dev/hdX); если вы считаете, что они
неправильные, то можете их поменять (но осторожно - при неправильной
настройке очень легко можно все угробить). Для автоматической установки
при загрузке можно создать файл(ы) /etc/sysconfig/harddisk/hdX и вписать
туда нужные опции; см. документацию пакета initscripts
(/usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt) и скрипт
/etc/rc.d/scripts/idetune, который и устанавливает параметры при
загрузке).
Мне лично чаще приходилось наоборот, отключать DMA на кривом железе.
