Возможно (не уверен - но возможно) потому, что ядра линейки 2.6 в ALT
собираются с выключенными BSD ptys (параметр конфигурации
CONFIG_LEGACY_PTYS). Если есть возможность глянуть на конфигурацию ядра
в CentOS - посмотрите как там этот параметр установлен.
