Доброе!
Может немного глупый вопрос... Но волнует... :)
Во многих случаях для ускорения файловой системы удобно монтировать её с
параметром noatime
А в каких случаях atime обязателен?

см. man mount
...
doesn't break mutt or other applications that need to know if a
file has been read since the last time it was modified.)
и для таких приложений давно придумали relatime.

Ой... Что-то у меня в man mount такой фразы вообще нет... (бранч 4.0)
Но все равно получается только экспериментально можно узнать или догадываться
по каждой программе?
А к примеру в обычной установке AltLinux Desktop что обязательно оставить с
atime ? /var/lock /var/run ?

Все что зависит от atime (например, find -atime) будет зависеть. Но как
уже говорилось выше, relatime является в этом случае оптимальным решением.
Для var/{lock,run} смысла в atime не вижу, поскольку что там можно
мониторить используя atime?
