Для пользователся POP3 майлбокс - это то, что лежит в его MUA и никак иначе...
А для пользователя IMAP и того курче - почтовый ящик

По пути до MUA поста может быть обработана большим количеством MTA и
MDA(да-да, правила forward). То что многие POP3/IMAP сервера
используют для избежания дублирования кода обработку почты с помощью
procmail/maildrop не повод отказывать им в принадлежности к классу
MDA.
