Позвольте, ну и что такого было в 2001 году?
В конце декабря 1999 вышел оффтопик w2k закрыв, таким образом дыру
между NT4.0 и отсутствием там USB и multimedia. Затем, поняв что они
на правильном пути был выпущен MSWXP.
Заранее предлагаю не опускаться до холиварсов. Просто, так вышло...
В России тогда любой софт стоял ВЕЗДЕ. И никто не собирался его
сносить. И он стоял уже больше 10 лет.
Что такого мог предложить Open Source тогда для десктопа?
Сейчас - IMHO в корне другая ситуация, поскольку вмешивается мощьный
фактор давления государства. На самом деле появилась возможность на
коммерческом фронте перекрыть вентиль утекания столь полезных бабосов
зарубеж, а на фронте прав человека показать, что есть другие способы
общения с компьютером - куда как более увлекательные, чем вылизывать
рельсы.

Не думаю так. Думаю, полезно представлять, для чего собственно
делается работа. Куда двигаться и т.п.
