Сэмюэля Хартлиба (Samuel Hartlib, ок. 1600–1662) можно назвать
первым профессиональным интеллигентом – с безупречно
интеллигентской же биографией. Сын торговца-эмигранта из Польши,
студент Кембриджа (в котором учился неофициально, но так и
не доучился), вдохновленный адепт религии просвещения с ее
универсалистским символом веры, который он сам же и утвердил
в качестве партийной программы: «зафиксировать все человеческие
знания и сделать их общедоступными для образования всего
человечества».
Святая вера Хартлиба в эксперимент была безупречна настолько,
что он, пытаясь вылечить камни в почках, начал употреблять внутрь
разбавленную серную кислоту, что видимо и стало причиной его
преждевременной смерти.
