Я ставил на PIII-500/64M Desktop 4.0, на удивление неплохо.

ALM2.4 и впрямь может быть оптимальней, если справляется.
IMHO правило большого пальца -- на железе лучше использовать
современный ему софт при отсутствии особых обстоятельств.
