Раньше всегда пользовался mc для работы с ФТП. Но тут случилось
непредвиденное - присоеденяться надо в пассивном режиме.
Опции типа ! перед хостнеймом не помогают - вернее даже не работают.
Как можно побороть?

Рекомендую посмотреть lftp (set ftp:passive-mode on --
