Т.е. при прямом обращении к серверу DNS ответ возвращается.

Т.е. через resolver ответа нет - поскольку в /etc/resolv.conf пусто.
А там, согласно предыдущего, должны быть строки
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
Итого, добавить их туда руками, сделать update_chrooted all,
проверить работу того же ping, далее разбираться, кто и почему
оттуда всё удаляет.
