Накатил свежее ядро. Во время старта udevd получаю сообщение о 
невозможности загрузить uhci-hcd. Это так и должно быть?

Не должно.  Покажите вывод dmesg после загрузки.

Понятно - очередной race при параллельной загрузке модулей через
udev+hotplug.  На всякий случай покажите ещё rpm -q modutils (хотя
изменения в этой области там были довольно давно).
