Установлены vlc/mplayer/smplayer
Запускаю kcmshell4 componentchooser, там в списке только vlc/smplayer.

А куда делся mplayer? Раньше вроде был.

Спасибо. Сам бы никогда не догадался, что консольный mplayer 
прописывается через mplayer-gui с gmplayer'ом.

В mplayer есть mplayer-console.desktop , но в нем написано
NoDisplay=true
Его можно показать в списке, но надо подумать, стоит ли показывать или стоит 
убрать NoDisplay.

Лично мне кажется, что mplayer (без mplayer-gui) должен содержать в себе 
все, чтоб его можно было настроить плеером по умолчанию.

NoDisplay=true это стандарт, если desktop файл - это mime обработчик.

Стандарт так и говорит:
NoDisplay means "this application exists, but don't display it in the menus". This can be useful to e.g. associate this application with MIME types, so that it gets launched from a file manager (or other apps), without having a menu entry for it (there are tons of good reasons for this, including e.g. the netscape -remote, or kfmclient openURL kind of stuff). 

т.е. NoDisplay=true там по делу.

И опять же: в этом пакете gmplayer. А вся суть mplayer'а в том, что у 
него нет (и ему оно не надо) никакого гуя. Так что однозначно надо 
добавить все нужное в mplayer.

Там вроде бы все нужное добавлено.
Это только под KDE4 проблемы? 
Под Gnome3/Mate консольный mplayer в "открыть с помощью" присутствует?

Не знаю на счет "открыть с помощью". Это совершенно неинтересное 
действие (если я правильно понял, о чем речь). Ибо типов видео-файлов 
много-много. И мы хотим задать дефолтный плеер для их всех сразу, а не 
перебирать их все вручную.

Если вам для себя, то проще всего вписать awk'ом mplayer-console.desktop
в .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list.
Или вам надо на много пользователей/много машин это выставить?

Наверняка. В KDE4 присутствует. Я в баге 28548 отписался.

Можно и так.
Выбор видеоплеера в `kcmshell4 componentchooser` редактирует именно его.

Кстати, про gmplayer: если он вызывается по клику на видео-файл, то в 
течение минуты наблюдается "знаменитый" КДЕшный "прыгающий курсор". 
Значит, для этого приложения стоит отключить отклик запуска.

Хорошее наблюдение, это наш патч некорректно вносил StartupNotify=true.

Залил NMU:
1.0-alt35.32772.10

- NMU: dropped StartupNotify=true from mplayer-svn-r32603-desktop.patch
  as this is not implemented in current gmplayer.

Эх, это уже 10-й NMU релиз у mplayer, как он остался без майнтайнера :(
Жаль пакет, протухает. Думаю, может, даже если не браться за его
майнтайнерство, стоит хотя бы версию обновить, чтобы пакет остался на плаву.

Возможно, кто-то еще хочет взяться?
