Да можно и с патчем, две строчки в /etc/magic
Но может лучше обновить пакет? Он у нас на два года устарел

Кстати, а как mc решает, что этот файл архив? Нужно пересобирать с новым
magic? А то подправил /etc/magic, теперь file работает как надо, а mc
игнорирует архив.
