Заметил, что все WM/DE, которые мне удалось запустить в окне Xnest, не
перерисовывают экран. Раньше такого не наблюдалось. Или Xnest'ом уже
никто не пользуется?

Ага, спасибо. Осталось понять, как бы его попроще в скрипт запихнуть,
чтоб стартовал сразу в wm-select. Банальный
#!/bin/bash
/usr/bin/Xephyr :3 &
DISPLAY=:3 /usr/bin/xterm
не работает, хотя те же команды, набранные вручную, делают что надо.

xinit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc -- /usr/bin/Xephyr :2 -host-cursor -screen
1024x600x32 -dpi 96 -ac
