А потом ps -A и kill отстреливта ькуски гнома.
Гном только из GDM запускается, да и то не запускается settings daemon и
не добавляется на панель регулятор громкости

прибивай гвоздиками в /etc/X11/xorg.conf - иначе никак.
Вообще же действительно, непонятно, можно ли сделать, чтобы все
гномовские программы писали кудато отладочную инфу ?
Похоже пока, что они слишком уж сильно прячут начинку от простых
пользоваателей, что и захочешь - не поймешь что происзодит.
