Странное поведение. У меня, например, не воспроизводится.
Какая у вас версия xorg? Наисвежайшая из Сизифа или подревнее?
При этом пакет xorg-x11 можно удалять безболезненно - это виртуальный
пакет, содержащий зависимости на все другие пакеты xorg для полной их
установки, а вот xorg-x11-xfs сноситься не должен.
Попробуйте посмотреть на зависимость пакетов: чего такого нужно gdm от xorg?
