С одной стороны, возможно я создаю раздел для последующей установки
ОС "XP" или другой, или создаю раздел для совместного хранения данных
в разных ОС.
Но, с другой, возможен-же случай и когда я не держу на своей машине
дополнительно "ОС XP"?
И в этом, втором, случае, при создании раздела мне понадобится
совершать дополнительное действие по указанию типа?

Насколько я помню, fdisk всегда создавал раздел именно для своей
системы. Как линуксовый, так, скажем, и досовский (что создают
графические ОС своими мастерами - не в курсе).
