А нельзя ли собирать пакеты под Athlon, хотя бы таких вещей как kеrnel24 & XFree86?

Можно. Можно хоть все пересобрать под Athlon/P4/ etc... etc...
Но к сожалению, у нас на это совершенно нет времени. Так что пока,
пожалуй, единственный способ - пересобирать пакеты самому под свою
архитектуру.

Вот, для проверки XFree86-4.0.3 собирается. Я когда-то 4.0.2
собрал, так понравилось =)

Кстати, приличное количество пакетов (gimp-1.2.1-ipl2mdk, например)
обламывается с криком:
checking whether build environment is sane... yes

checking for working makeinfo... found

Я думаю, что надо смотреть в сторону autoconf/libtool, но может,
подскажете, чтоб время впустую не тратить на поиск не совсем
понятно чего?
Т.е. проблема в configure?
