Обновился.
Стала Птичка версии:
thunderbird 3.1.7-alt1.20110123
А если в ней запустить из "Справки" "About", то видим что Птичка версии
3.1.8pre
Это так и должно быть?

На самом деле в их репозитории в тот же день, когда был сделал снапшот
был выставлен тег THUNDERBIRD_3_1_8_RELEASE:

но официального релиза пока не было.
